Hummingbird Heart

Kelsy Hates people, but loves birds. When Kel falls for a person who dresses as a bird and hands out fliers outside their favourite pet shop Kel must find out if it is the bird suit or the person wearing it that they are crushing on?

Kelsy is non-binary and is not sure where they fit in most relationships, thats why Kelsy (or Kel for short) chooses birds over people. Kel finds company and a feeling of belonging with their feathered companions. Kel works as a public servant, Kel hates their job and Steve the office bully makes life hell. Kel’s other workmates are confused and unsure of how to address them, so most give up and stop interacting with Kel altogether. Except Pam, an older trans woman who has taken Kel under her wing.

Kel has made their home an oasis of colour and light in grey, cold Canberra, Kel’s birds, especially the African Grey Parrot, Dizzy, get so excited when Kel gets home from work and Kel lights up and sheds their ‘grey’ demeanour to sing and dance with the birds.

The only other place Kel finds themself feeling at home is in the noisy and chaotic pet shop that they visit regularly to buy supplies for the birds… Paradise Pets is run by Aiden, who is the epitome of chaos but has a deep care and understanding of animals. So much so he doesn’t sell any animals, his shop is just full of his long term pets and is more of an animal shelter as he takes in more abandoned animals. Kel helps him with his birds as Aiden knows Kel has a unique connection with them. When Aiden employs Polly to stand outside the shop and hand out fliers in a bird suit for his new venture ‘psychic readings for pets’ Kel starts crushing on Polly. Kel in the most awkward moment of their life must find out who is under the suit. But to get close to Polly, Kel must dress up and attend a furry club…
